December 11, 2020 - Visiting Mid-Atlantic Soaring |
||||||
Mugsy and I hadn't flown in awhile so we met at Essex Skypark and headed to Frederick to have lunch at the on-field restaurant Airways Inn. After a delicious lunch, we hopped into our rides and headed north to check out Mid-Atlantic Soaring Center Airport. We were acutely aware of the P-40 restricted area to the west and gave it a wide berth.
Looking down at Mid-Atlantic Soaring Center Airport in a horrible picture.

Another bad shot which also shows the nearby Ski Liberty.
Mugsy and I landed and talked with the Vice President of the Mid-Atlantic Soaring Club who gave us a tour of the place. Way back in 1996, I had trailered my old Ka-4 glider here for an Octoberfest fly-in. I haven't been back here since. The airport is owned by the Mid-Atlantic Soaring Club and I had always thought it was a private field. But because they accept federal funds for the runway, it is a public airport. A very active soaring club uses this really nice facility. It brought back a lot of soaring memories for me. Has it really been ten years since I last soared in my Ka-8?
